Fusion gets more concrete: Pacific Fusion breaks ground on a $1 billion demonstration campus

On August 25, 2026, Pacific Fusion announced that it had broken ground on a roughly $1 billion Research & Manufacturing Campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The company says the site will house a Demonstration System designed to pursue net facility gain by 2030 and high-yield fusion output above 100 megajoules. It also announced a memorandum of understanding with the National Nuclear Security Administration related to high-yield fusion and high-energy-density science.

For an emerging-market observer, the most interesting part may be what surrounds the reactor physics.

What happened

Pacific Fusion is developing a pulser-driven inertial fusion approach using modular pulsed-power components. The New Mexico campus is intended to combine research, manufacturing, demonstration, and workforce development. The company says the investment will support about 200 permanent jobs as well as construction employment, and it is expanding component manufacturing in Los Lunas.

Why this is a market-development story

Fusion discussions often focus on a single technical threshold: whether a system can produce more useful fusion energy than the energy required to operate it. That threshold matters enormously, but commercial fusion will also require repeatable manufacturing, maintainable systems, supply chains, siting, utility relationships, regulatory pathways, trained labor, finance, and customers willing to plan around an emerging technology.

Pacific Fusion’s move is therefore a useful marker. The field is beginning to create physical industrial infrastructure before commercial power is proven. That raises risk, but it also begins forming the ecosystem that would be required if the technology works.

Gravonomy takeaway: Frontier markets often become real before the underlying technology is fully mature. Manufacturing campuses, public-private agreements, specialized workforces, component suppliers, and institutional relationships can be early forms of market infrastructure. They are not proof of commercial viability, but they can materially change the probability and speed of transition.

A terminology note

“Microreactor” is most commonly used today for very small fission reactors. Pacific Fusion is pursuing fusion, not a nuclear fission microreactor. The relevant frontier-market idea here is compact, modular, manufacturable fusion technology and the industrial system being built around it.
